Aromas of wood smoke, cinnamon, brown sugar, incense, and assorted red fruits inform the nose of a succulent, supple, impeccably balanced wine that has above average concentration and depth for the vintage. It will provide optimum drinking through 2019.

Horner makes vineyard-designate Pinot Noir from five American Viticultural Areas, and his standard barrel program of 40% new French oak for 15 months seemingly provides alluring sweet spice and roundness to each project. Here, it helps imparts notes of Dr Pepper, toffee and cinnamon Red Hots to the theme of black currant jam, strawberry pie, cherry cola and fresh-cut rhubarb. This may be the most hedonistic of the 2009 collection, but there’s ample acidity for traditional Pinot Noir pairings of poultry and salmon.

Bishop Creek designation from Erath, this dark-toned, deep and concentrated Pinot Noir is one to cellar. The fruit is seamless, sappy and dense, suggesting a mix of ripe berries. Fourteen months in French oak, about 40% new, seems just right, as the barrel notes of toast and coffee dance around the juicy berry flavors without smothering them.
