Erath 2009 Prince Hill Pinot Noir Dundee Hills

  D Magazine

Tasting the final blend of the 2009 Prince Hill Pinot Noir, which includes the three clones noted above and is aged 15 months in partially new French oak is elegant and balanced, fulfilling Gary’s hope of making a wine that has a graceful start, building to elegant layers of red fruit, spice and earthiness, with soft tannins that lead to a long, lingering finish. The goal is to make a wine that will taste as good young, just after bottling, as it will after a few years of aging. Though the flavor profile will change with age, the goal is to still make it taste good whether it is young or old.

Lush and luscious, this is a standout among the 2009 Erath Pinots. The richness of the fruit gives this zaftig wine immense appeal, with deep cherry flavors streaked with gun metal, anise, mocha, and coffee. A lick of dark chocolate ensures a glorious finish.

The deepest of the Erath Pinots, it is very keenly defined by its ripe cherry fruit whose slightly juicy aspects and complementary oak overlays provide a lot to like. Full in body, as are most of the Erath offerings, this one is supple to start and fairly open in stance on the palate, yet it has enough underlying acidity to achieve a fair measure of stamina and quite noteworthy length. If not in want of great aging, this bottling seemed very well-poised to reward a few years in the cellar.

Polished, with a light burr of tannins around a juicy and distinctive core of red berry, beef carpaccio and floral flavors, persisting impressively on the finish.
